You asked. We listened. And our new Blonde Perfecting Purple Shampoo is finally here!
While you guys have been asking for a purple shampoo for a long time, we wanted to make sure that when we did it, we did it right. We also wanted to give you a product that offered something a little bit different from what’s already out there (aside from our signature scent—obviously included). With those things in mind, we created a formula that offers professional-strength tone correction but is still gentle and nourishing. Which means that in addition to brass reduction, you should experience healthier looking and feeling hair with more shine, depth, and dimension. What’s not to love?
Read on for more details about our newest shampoo, including how it works, who might need it, and the ingredients that make it special.
Why use a purple shampoo?
If your color your hair, you’ve likely experienced brassiness, or those unwanted warm tones that emerge between color services. This is a result of the underlying pigment that is exposed during the color process—generally, yellow in blonde hair and orange or red in darker shades. That said, brassiness can occur in natural shades, too. For instance, grey hair is prone to yellow tones due to environmental factors including pollution and even medication.
The TLDR? Regardless of the source of your brassiness, a purple shampoo can help neutralize it and restore cooler tones to your color.
How does purple shampoo work?
It’s actually color theory. You might remember the color wheel from your elementary school art classes. And if you remember the color wheel, you might remember that colors that are opposite each other on that wheel cancel each other out. That’s the general idea behind purple shampoo: the purple color of the product cancels out the yellow and orange tones in your hair.
Bonus: In addition to counteracting brassy tones, the iridescent violet pigments in Blonde Perfecting Purple Shampoo enhance the depth and dimension of your haircolor and provide a natural-looking sheen to help your highlights shine.
Will it turn my hair purple?
The short answer is no—in most cases, the only visual effect will be diminished brassiness. However, the intensity of the purple pigments is directly affected by the porosity of your hair. If your hair is highly porous, you may want to play around with the leave-on time. The less time the shampoo spends on your hair, the less likely it is you’ll see any purple in the final result. (Wondering how porous your hair is? Read this!)
Who can use Blonde Perfecting Purple Shampoo?
Anyone who wants to diminish warm tones in their hair! It’s suitable for all hair types and formulated to work on blonde, lightened (including lightened brunettes), and grey hair.
How often should I use Blonde Perfecting Purple Shampoo?
It varies depending on your starting shade and the amount of brass reduction you hope you achieve. We recommend starting with every third wash and experimenting to find out what works best for you.
How long should I leave it in my hair?
This shampoo should be massaged throughout wet hair (and your scalp) like any other shampoo, then left on for 3–5 minutes. Follow with your favorite Moroccanoil conditioner.
Purple shampoo is known to be drying. Will I have the same experience with Blonde Perfecting Purple Shampoo?
No—that’s actually one of the main issues we wanted to address when we created this product. Because we know that most people who use purple shampoo color their hair, we wanted to create a formula that was as nourishing as possible. For that reason, our Blonde Perfecting Purple Shampoo is sulfate-free and color-safe. It also contains ArganID™ technology to infuse argan oil deep into the hair's cortex, helping to seal the cuticle and impart brilliant shine.
What’s the difference between Blonde Perfecting Purple Shampoo and Moroccanoil Color Depositing Mask Platinum?
Our Platinum Color Depositing Mask is a temporary haircolor mask for light blonde to medium blonde hair that provides deep conditioning treatment benefits and deposits intense ash pigments. Blonde Perfecting Purple Shampoo cleanses and tones the hair to reduce brassiness in grey, blonde, or lightened hair.
