Art Basel Miami Beach is one of our ideal winter getaways. Every year, 250+ galleries show off the work of more than 4,000 artists at this gigantic art fair. Taking in some great contemporary art surrounded by sunshine and palm trees? Yes, please.
Here are five of our favorite things we saw this year.
1. The Museum Garage
Literally covered in art, Miami Beach’s Museum Garage is the most aesthetically pleasing parking garage we’ve ever seen. The entrance to the garage features French artist Nicolas Buffe’s “Serious Play,” an installation inspired by baroque paintings and Japanese anime.
2. Gimhongsok’s Balloon Sculptures
These cute, playful sculptures are actually bronzed balloons – part of Korean artist Gimhongsok’s “Untitled (Short People)” series. From his solo exhibition “Dwarf, Dust, Doubt,” the balloons were individually blown up by over 100 of the artist’s friends and acquaintances.
3. Penny Slinger's Feminist Collages
British artist Penny Slinger has been making surreal, bold photo collages since the ‘70s. (Heads up: most are not safe for work!).
4. Swan and Bar Bevy
It’s no secret that Miami has a ton of nightlife and dining hotspots. One of the latest is Swan and Bar Bevy, a collab between hospitality entrepreneur David Grutman and Pharrell. Pictured: their delicious mushroom rigatoni.
